The German sailors celebrated with cheers and hugs as they crossed the finish line first on the last race. Also celebrating their entry into the select double Soling world champions’ group. From the beginning they showed great consistency in the race area and remained in front within the competition. The four victories out of nice were fundamental to reach the title.
“It was an amazing championship. Mainly this last race. Today, we faced fair conditions with a perfect wind and everything has helped us. The race was technical and in some moments we were side by side with Gustavo’s crew. The victory came for details. I believe we were precise and hit more than the others. We counted with our luck and when u work well, lucky helps you so we were with her today.” Said two times World Champion Roman Koch.
On Friday there was only one race and as expected, it was a private dispute between teams from Germany and
“Earlier we got disqualified so that forced us to be more cautious, without being able to venture into racing. Koch is a good sailor and knew how to take advantage of the opportunities. We had high standards competition here. In the last race he scored and we could not do much”, said Warburg, 2001 and 2004 world champion.
Brazilians: Cícero Hartmann, Flávio Quevedo and André Renard finished in third overall and were the most regular Brazilian crew in the competition. “We got to the final with a slight chance of winning the title, but we knew it would be very difficult. We were psychologically prepared and also got new equipment for the boat. Using government’s Athlete-supports we bought new sheets and improved the boat. The Championship had well qualified sailors. I think I missed a bit of boldness in certain races. But in general it was good, said Cícero, vice-champion in 2007.
On Friday there was a south wind of 20 km/h. The top three in the last race were the same as they were overall. The Soling World Championship counted with 20 crews from Brazil, Germany, Argentina, United States and United Kingdom.
